Richard Belzer (1944-2023) was an American actor/comedian who held the record for appearing in the most television series as the same character. He originated the role of Detective John Munch in the NBC seriesHomicide: Life on the Street, and would subsequently appear as the character in 14 seasons ofLaw & Order: Special Victims Unit. He appeared as Munch in a total of ten television series, including the originalLaw & Order,Law & Order: Trial by Jury,The X-Files,The Beat,Arrested DevelopmentandThe Wire, as well as30 Rock(although in that particular series he was portraying himself portraying the SVU character). His portrayal of Munch for nearly 22 consecutive seasons (7 onHomicideand 14 onLaw & Order: Special Victims Unit) had Belzer also surpassing the record for the most consecutive seasons portraying the same character on a primetime series (until it was surpassed by his SVU co-starMariska Hargitay). Belzer also was the cousin of the actorHenry Winkler. He passed away in February of 2023 at the age of 78 following a period of declining health.
