Originally starting in Shakespearean theatre as a teenager, he rose to prominence in 1999 for portraying Stuart Alan Jones in the television seriesQueer as Folkand Tommy Carcetti inThe Wire. His most prominent television role was as Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish from 2011 to 2017 inGame of Thrones, which earned him widespread recognition. In addition, he also portrayed Aberama Gold in series 4 and 5 ofPeaky Blindersand currently portrays Milo Sunter inMayor of Kingstown. On film, Gillen is known for portraying the unnamed CIA agent in the (oft parodied) opening scene ofThe Dark Knight Rises, Janson inMaze Runner: The Scorch Trialsand itssequel, and Jack Blackwell inThose Who Wish Me Dead.
