Sir Dirk Bogarde (born Derek Jules Gaspard Ulric Niven van den Bogaerde) was a British actor, artist, writer, journalist and poet. Born in 1921, he joined the British Army during World War II and was commissioned as an officer. He was one of the first British officers to enter Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, an experience which deeply affected him for the rest of his life. After retiring from the army with the rank of major, he broke into film, achieving stardom with the comedyDoctor in the House. His most famous roles include Tom Riley inThe Blue Lamp, Hugo Barrett inThe Servant, Gustav von Aschenbach inDeath in Venice, and Lieutenant-General Frederick Browning inA Bridge Too Far.
