Ed O'Neill is an American actor best known to television audiences for portraying sitcom fathers, notably the boorish, misogynistic Al Bundy in the long-running television FOX comedy seriesMarried with Childrenand more recently, the patriarch Jay Pritchett inModern Family. Prior toMarried with Children, O'Neill had previously been known for playing 'hard types' in such films and television series asThe Dogs of WarandMiami Vice. During his run on the FOX sitcom, O'Neill found it hard to get cast in any role that was not comedy-related. In fact, after filming the role of a US Naval officer at a court martial in the 1991 filmFlight of the Intruder, his role had to be recast after the film studio encountered disastrous test screenings where his appearance elicited unwanted laughter (the scene was eventually re-shot with actor Fred Dalton Thompson). WhenMarried with Childrenended in 1997, O'Neill was able to appear in more serious roles, notably in several films directed by friendDavid Mametand as Lt. Joe Friday in the 2003 remake of the seriesDragnetbefore returning to television comedy in the seriesModern Family. O'Neill is also a Brazilian Ju Jitsu blackbelt and had been signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers, before being let go in 1969.
