Emil Jannings(born Theodor Friedrich Emil Janenz; 23 July 1884 - 2 January 1950) was a German actor and one of the most famous film stars of the 1920s and 1930s. He was a pioneer of German cinema, known for his intense and expressive performances, often portraying authority figures or tragic characters. In 1929, he became the first actor ever to win an Oscar for his roles inThe Last CommandandThe Way of All Flesh. During the Nazi era, he appeared in several propaganda films, which affected his career after World War II. Jannings was also successful on stage and had a lasting influence on German acting.
