Ernest Borgnine

Ernest Borgnine (born Ermes Effron Borgnino January 24, 1917 – July 8, 2012) was an Oscar-winning actor (Best Actor forMarty, 1955) and was well known to television audiences for his roles as Lt. Cmdr Quentin McHale in the seriesMcHale's Navyand Dominic Santini in the seriesAirwolf. To younger generations, Borgnine is best known as the voice of Mermaid Man in the cartoonSpongeBob SquarePantsfrom 1999 until his death in 2012. Borgnine served twice in the United States Navy (1935-1941, 1942-1945). He voluntarily reenlisted in January 1942 after the attack on Pearl Harbor. During WWII, he served on the anti-submarine vessel U.S.S.Silphand patrolled the eastern seaboard of the United States. In 2004, Borgnine received the honorary rank of Chief Petty Officer from the US Navy and received the special honor for his naval service and support of the Navy and Navy families worldwide.
