Fernando Casado Arambillet (1917-1994) best known as Fernando Rey, was a Spanish film, theatre, and television actor, who worked in both Europe and the United States. To American audiences he is best known for playing the role of the high-level drug dealer Alain Charnier inThe French ConnectionandFrench Connection II. During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) he fought for the Republicans/Loyalists. Though he was on the losing side he survived not only the war, but the purges that followed under General Franco. He had worked for decades before appearing inThe French Connection(1971), but the success of the movie catapulted him into international stardom. He passed away on March 9, 1994, at the age of 76.
