Jean Gabin, birth name Jean-Alexis Moncorgé (May 16, 1904 - November 15, 1976) was a French film actor, singer, and a major icon of European cinema. He rose to fame in the 1930s with films likePépé le MokoandLa Grande Illusion. Gabin often portrayed strong, quiet, yet deeply expressive characters, helping to define the poetic realism of French film. After a break during World War II, he continued his career successfully and remained an important figure in French cinema well into his later years. During his 40-year acting career, he made approximately one hundred films. As one of the biggest stars of French cinema, he was appointed an Officer of theLégion d'honneurin 1962.
