Marion Robert Morrison, better known as John Wayne, was an American actor, best remembered for his numerous roles in Western and war films throughout the Golden Age of Hollywood. Born in Iowa in 1907, Wayne's family moved to Southern California when he was young. Wayne's first lead role was in the 1930 WesternThe Big Trail, although he would not reach widespread recognition untilStagecoach, directed by Ford. With over 170 credited roles, Wayne is widely considered one of the most iconic and well-known movie stars of all time. His most famous roles include Ethan Edwards inThe Searchers, Sheriff John T. Chance inRio Bravo, Lt. Col. Vandervoort inThe Longest Day, Tom Doniphon inThe Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, and Rooster Cogburn inTrue Grit. His last film role was John Bernard "J.B."
