Gary Oldman is an English actor who first gained notice for his portrayal of musician Sid Vicious in the 1986 biopicSid and Nancy. Oldman would subsequently take on roles that required various accents, and became well known to film audiences for his villainous roles in such films asLeon (The Professional),Air Force One,The Book of Eli, andThe Fifth Element. He then gained prominence for his role as Commissioner James Gordon inChristopher Nolan'sDark Knightfilm trilogy. He received Academy Award nominations for Best Actor for his roles as George Smiley in the feature film adaptation ofTinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)in addition to his portrayal of Winston Churchill in the 2017 dramaDarkest Hour, a role for which he received his first Academy Award in 2018.
